Nighttime Around Kelowna

The winter of 2014/2015 I have been determined not to be depressed by the lack of sunshine and short days so I made a decision back in the fall that I would use the time to learn more about nighttime photography.  Here are some of the shots that I took over the last couple of months.

I find that with long exposures and a digital camera it is far easier to arrive at the proper exposure length than with film.  The digital sensor seems to be pretty linear so you can take a test shot at a wide aperture and then stop it down and increase the exposure length accordingly to get the longer exposure and the wider depth of field that you may want.

Mount Saint Helens

I grew up in central Alberta.  In 1980 I was 11 years old so I didn’t really understand the significance of the eruption of Mount Saint Helens.  My wife and I tried to visit there in about 1998 but there was low fog and rain so we just had to imagine what it would look like.  Last week we decided to meet some friends there and ended up seeing it on a gloriously sunny day and here are a couple of the shots from that day.

Aircraft Photos

Here are some photos of some of the Aircraft at the Abbotsford Airshow.  The first two are of a Russian Mig-17 (also known as a Fresco).

This next group shows an F-18 Hornet in various maneuvers.  I think it looks cool the way the third image is blurred due to the heat of the exhaust.

The final photo is of a Boeing C17 Globemaster taking off in a very steep climb.

The Sails

My daughter had a volleyball practice outside at City Park on Sunday because the gym that they normally practice in was booked.  The rest of the fam dropped her off so we could walk around down at the lake since it was a beautiful evening.  These photos are of a very interesting sculpture that has been on the Kelowna waterfront for years.  It looks as if it has been recently painted.

Margaret Falls

If you ever go camping at Herald Provincial Park near Salmon Arm, BC, make sure you make the short hike up to Margaret Falls.  The hike itself is cool because it is through a rain forest microcosm in a narrow canyon in a region of the province that is quite dry.  You get the the end of the canyon and there is this great falls that is quite hard to get a good picture of because of its size relative to how far back you can get.  I could just barely fit the falls in my frame with my widest angle lens.

Listen

I call this one “Listen” obviously because ears are for listening but I also like to use it as a bit of a reminder to listen for the details in the world.  I try to notice the small things that are just as amazing as the big things.  It’s easy to stop listening because of all the noise and distraction.
