Color Photographs
On the Rail
I got kicked out of the house early one morning because my wife was having a bunch of ladies over for coffee. Luckily it was a frosty beautiful spring morning. This is just one of the things I saw.
The Dry Side
A few years ago when my family and I visited the big island of Hawaii this is a view that we say to the west of the island. It is very dry because it is in the rain shadow of Mauna Kea. It amazes me that the east side of the island can be a tropical rain forest when this is what you see in the west – only about a 2 hour drive away.
Sculpture Silhouette
I have sometimes asked myself if I take a photo of a sculpture or other artwork does it mean that my photo is not art rather just a record of someone’s artwork? In this case I think it is alright since it shows the sculpture in a light that is rarely seen.
Kelowna Riding Club
This is a photo of the freshly painted stalls at the Kelowna Riding Club in the spring.
Attack of the Frigate Birds
These creatures are called Frigate birds. They are swarming around the carcass of a stingray trying to get their fair share. I think this shot is reminiscent of The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock. These birds are very interesting. Despite the fact they feed mostly on fish, they cannot swim or take off from flat surfaces. They catch fish by flying low to the water and scooping them up from the surface. They can actually fly for more than a week at a time.
Two Types of Fishers
I like this shot because of the contrast between the “fishbird” and his simple equipment and technique and the fishermen and their methods. My bets are on the bird for getting the biggest haul. This photo was taken in the bay at Sayulita Mexico.
Brook – (A River Runs Through It)
This creek in the valley in Montana where “A River Runs Through It” was filmed. It is a beautiful area with plenty of trout fishing.
Mexican Beetle
It is hard to take a bad photo of an original Volkswagen Beetle. They have at least as much character as any other car out there. I am probably influenced because I grew up in the era of Herbie the Love Bug. In fact one of my childhood memories is of actually seeing a bug painted in Herbie colors on the way home from seeing “Herbie Rides Again” in the theater in about 1975. Now I’m just babbling…
The Fintry Queen – Dead Again
Unknown to most of the world there is a boat on Okanagan lake that began it’s life as a passenger ferry. Once the bridge was built across the lake in 1958 the boat was decommissioned for the second time. It was actually built in Vancouver as a barge but was subsequently cut in pieces and shipped to Kelowna to be resurrected as the passenger ferry. In 1968 it was rebuilt as a passenger ship and then was converted to a dining boat / floating restaurant. Since that time different companies have tried to make a business out of it but it has failed once again. Long live the Fintry Queen!
